White Balance of Your Digital Camera
Your digital camera comes equipped with a lot of minor
settings that are very important to know and master in order for you to be able
to capture quality photos. The white balance sensor detects the surrounding
light and color conditions to do the job of making the white portions of the
picture appear white and the other colors appear natural when the photograph is
taken. The snow on a mountain peak or your white shirt, both may appear to be
bluish in color if the white balance is not set properly.
White balance is also the reason why digital photography has become superior compared to film photography. If you are using a camera that runs on films then you must select your film carefully to suit the lighting conditions of the place where you plan to do all your photo-shooting, but with the white balance setting, digital photography makes such an expense of buying a different film for each setting an issue of the past. You can now just change the white balance to suit the conditions or may be leave it to the camera itself to adjust the lighting conditions.
In your digital camera, you may find all the pre-set white balance settings that you may need, right from sunny and cloudy day settings to indoor or low light settings. The auto white balance mode however will let you shoot under most lighting conditions without the trouble of having to choose the right setting for the shots.
Just like most other settings of your digital camera, you need to learn to control the white balance setting as well if you wish to produce quality photos that are full of natural and vivid colors. A deeper understanding of how to control the white balance will develop if you experiment a little. Select a subject and shoot it under the same lighting condition but with different settings on the white balance to study the differences in the pictures. Also detect which picture looks most like the original or which one looks the best. Select the cloudy mode while shooting a sunset to find your picture to be vivid with color. Similarly, now try different lighting conditions with the same setting or change both at will. Experiments of this kind will fill you with experience and within a short time you will develop the skills necessary for choosing the right conditions and settings for each instance.
