The Two Types of Zoom: Optical and Digital

Types Of ZoomingIf you have bought a digital camera then you will probably have already seen the two kind of zoom that your camera is offering, the optical and the digital zoom. There is a huge difference in between the two types of zoom in both terms of quality and type.

Optical zoom is the actual zoom, what this means is that only when you zoom optically does the lens of your digital camera increase in order to visually bring the view closer to your eyes. When you zoom optically, you will observe no change in quality of the picture that you would take. One point to remember while taking a photograph after zooming optically is that you must keep a steady hand or use a solid base to take the picture. As you increase the zoom, the sensitivity of your camera also increases, thus there remains a chance that the picture captured may come blurred if your hand gets shakes even a bit.

A digital zoom is not a real zoom because when you zoom digitally, no change takes place in the lens of your camera; it just crops the view and expands the cropped section to give it the appearance of a zoom. It is sometimes added as an extension at the end of the optical zoom capacity for the camera. The pictures you take with the help of digital zoom are more or less bound to be blurry and of low quality compared to the pictures taken with the help of optical zoom or no zoom at all. The washed out, detail lacking and unfocused pictures that you may see in your camera can very well be the result of a digital zoom. Avoid digital zoom altogether to get the best results out of your photography.

Digital zoom can be useful if you plan on using the photographs taken, on the internet only. On the internet, Photos of lower detail may not appear all that bad at all; in fact it may actually appear just as good as any other image. The problem will arise especially if you plan on printing the photographs that you are taking while zooming digitally. It is best to stick to optical zoom if you are planning to print you photos out or for any type of quality photography for that matter.

When zooming is not helping then just take a few steps forward if you are finding your subject to be further than your desire, but if the scenario does not allow you to do so, then you can use another trick. Set your camera’s resolution to its highest ability and then focus on your subject as much as you can. After you have taken the picture, crop it to include in the frame only the part that you want to keep and as you had set the resolution to the highest capacity, the picture is more likely not to lose any details.
